Kick the Can Game

 

 

Kick the Can is a fun Childrens game that combines the game Hide and Seek with Tag.

 

 

 

What you need to play

Empty can

Large outdoor playing area with lots of places for kids to hide

 

 

Object of the Kick the Can Game

Players hide and can avoid being caught by the Seeker if they can kick the can before the Seeker kicks it.

 

 

How To Set up the game

Choose a large open area and put the can in the middle of the area. Choose a player to be “it” or the Seeker for the first round of play.

Kick the Can also requires a spot near the can that will be the jail and hold all the players that get caught by the Seeker.

 

 

How to Play Kick the Can

 

The Seeker counts to 100 and the other players hide. The Seeker begins to search the area for hidden players.  When they see a hidden child they call out both the child's name and the child's location.  For example if the Seeker spots a Mary in a tree then the Seeker would yell out "Mary in the Oak Tree!"  Then both the Seeker and the player who has been caught race to the can and try to be the first one to kick it.

 

If the Seeker kicks the can first then the player goes to the “jail”.

 

If the player kicks the can first the they and all the prisoners in the jail are free and the Seeker must count again.

 

 If the Seeker has caught all players and placed them in the jail then the game starts a new round and the Seeker chooses their replacement.

 

 

Variations of Kick the Can
Instead of calling out the players name, the Seeker must Tag the hiding player to send them to jail before the hiding player can kick the can.

 

 Any player who has not been caught can kick the can (without being caught) and set all the prisoners free.

 

After tagging or calling out a players name they have found, the Seeker has to run back to the can, put their foot on top of it and call out “ 1, 2, 3 on ______” (fill in the blank with the players name) before the player who has been found can kick the can from under his foot. This gives the player who is caught 3 additional seconds to get out of their hiding place.
